The above program has one function called main. This. function tells your program where to start running. All. C codes must have a main function. The commands have to be written. Anything after two slashes the compiler ignores. The last. part of the program you should notice is the #include. Printf takes a string of. It declares several variables, performs some. After. they enter a number and press enter, it will print out how much it will cost them to buy. The new part of this. This program. has two variables numcandy, and cost. These are the names of the variables. Before a variable can. Declaring a variable in C is easy, you simply tell the compiler the. So in the above example. The line int numcandy; tells the. Then you can simply use numcandy through out your. Integers are non decimal numbers like - 1. The other variable in. After running the program you will notice that the scanf function. It waits for the user to enter a number, and then press enter. It puts. this value into our variable numcandy. Next notice some special character sequences contained in. First the printf has the sequence . This sequence simply means move to the. Next we have the %f and %d. These tell printf and scanf what type of variables to expect. So if you changed the above programs printf line to .. C uses the following standard variable types: int - > integer variable. The printf function can be instructed to print integers, floats. The general syntax is printf( . Some useful formats are. So using this new knowledge, you could change the above program where it prints the cost to .. Look back up at the program one more time at the line. This is the math of the program. This line is fairly self explanatory. It takes the value. Here are a list of the standard. Now that we've covered printf and the basic data types, we can move onto program control meaning loops and conditions. Like for the above example program if they put in that they wanted to. We could print out, that the store doesn't have that many. This section. will describe the basic loop and condition statements available in C, and then will end with a short example. C has three types of conditional statements if, else, and switch. Either by omitting branches or by. Meaning having an if inside of another if. Now. that we can make an if we need to make the condition that goes inside of the parenthesis. Conditions are logical operators involving the comparison of quantities (of the same. Here are a list of the basic conditional operators. For instance using the above. So for instance if (money> 5. If you. replace the & & with . I think you get the picture. The. single equals sign as we learned in lesson two is the assignment operator. You use it to assign values to variables. If you have no operators inside the parenthesis then C will simply check to see if the value is anything. If you would want to execute. This. construct is particularly useful in handling input variables. But we wanted to. As an excersize rewrite the above code segment to use if's instead of the switch. C provides two. basic types of loops a while and a for loop. While and for loops continue to repeat basically until. Here is the syntax for while and for loops. The condition is tested upon entering the. Any logical construction (see below for a list) can be used in this. C permits you to write an infinite loop, and provides. For example. consider the following (admittedly not- so- clean) re- write of the previous loop: angle. Finally, to wrap up lesson three we will. Its syntax is. simple- -for instance #define ANGLE. C distinguishes between lowercase and uppercase letters. It is customary to use only capital letters in defining global. You should be able to understand all the code there in. Then after all are. This gives great flexibility and power to the language, but it also makes it. Arrays are. very interesting since they can be accessed through pointers or array syntax, that is why. With that said, let's get started. Imagine memory. as this big long street with houses on it. Each variable is a house on a street. Each house. can hold a number of people (value of variable). But how do you find out how many people (what. You have to have some kind of address. Then with. the address, you can go to the house and then ask it: How many are there? Then you can get. This is the basic concept behind pointers. This should seem. The. second line tells the compiler to reserve space to store a pointer. As you can notice the way you. A pointer is a storage location. The third line should remind you of the scanf statements. An asterick * in front of. C to dereference the pointer, and go to memory. Then you can make assignments. Since ptr. X points to var? You can reference a variable. Windows and all sorts of programs do this all the time. It can, and for those who aren't careful misuse of pointer can do a lot of damage. What would happen if we executed it, who knows? Without this line ptr. X is. never assigned an address. Basically it points to some random data anywhere in memory. If you. executed line 4 without line 3. You could get very wierd results. Since ptr. X hasn't been pointed. This may not always happen, but it is certainly a possibility. Make sure they are assigned to something before you use. The most obvious. The following. program will make a string, access some data in it, print it out. Access it again using. Basically this. is just ten individual chars which are all put together in memory into the same place. An apartment complex in memory. They can all be access through our variable name Str along with a. Also notice that when C. The elements you can access are numbered 0 to 9. Accessing the first apartment corresponds to accessing. C. Arrays are always like this, so learn to deal with it. Always count from 0 to size of array - 1. All character strings need to end with this. If they do not, and then someone calls printf on the string. Then printf would. So you will end up with a. So make sure to terminate your strings properly. Just like we learned, I declared a character pointer with an. Str. I then pointed p. Str to the starting address of our character string using the line. Str = & Str. Now p. Str points to the start of our char array Str. C has a bunch of short cuts to manipulate variables the ++ just means. The ++ syntax here is equivalent to. Str = p. Str + 1. After manipulating the string, I terminated it with '\0' and printed it out. That about. does it for pointers and arrays, here are a few quick notes. I won't. bother covering them, since you should be able to figure them out just by looking at them. Another note is that you can make arrays of any. C's types, I just used char arrays since they seem to be the most common. Here is a sample line to make an array of five integers: int arrayofint. We have already encountered the function. Now let's look at writing and using our own functions. The C compiler checks for. When someone writes a function for someone to use that funciton will often. C source file. Sometimes, however we may not have access to. This is the case for most standard library. However, we still know how to use printf, and the arguments it requires. Argument. type checking is accomplished through the use of header files (like. The most commonly used header. I/O routines. < string. To find out more about there header files and the functions they contain you can either by. C or visit our Other Resources. In addtion to. those header files, we can of course make our own functions and header files. The. return- value must be of the declared type. This means. that local ``copies'' of the values of the arguments are passed to the routines. In order to change (or define) an argument in the. C to. change the ``real'' argument in the calling routine. First let's. illustrate what happen if the variables are passed by value. Only the copies of the arguments are exchanged. The RIGHT way to do. Also note that in the above code how the function. It was declared with a semicolon, and ZERO statements before the main. This is called forward declaration. This allows the C Compiler to compile main, without. All it needs to know is what exchange arguments look like. This way. we can put the exchange function after our main function. THE SCHEDULE BELOW IS FOR EXPERIENCED RUNNERS: individuals who have left their Novice roots behind and who want to improve their performances. You should be capable of running 3. K and 1. 0- K races, if not a marathon, and at least be willing to consider the possibility that some speedwork might help you improve. If that sounds like too much training, and this is your first half marathon, you might be more comfortable training using the Novice 1 or 2 Program. The terms used in the training schedule are somewhat obvious, but let me explain what I mean anyway. Further information and explanations are included in my interactive training programs available through Training. Peaks, where I send you daily emails telling you what to run and how to train. Easy Runs: The runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays and sometimes Saturdays are designed to be done at a comfortable pace. Don't worry about how fast you run these workouts. If you're training with a friend, the two of you should be able to hold a conversation. If you can't do that, you're running too fast. Don't worry about running precisely those distances, but you should come close. Pick a course through the neighborhood, or in some scenic area where you think you might enjoy running. Then measure the course either by car or bicycle or GPS watch. In deciding where to train, talk to other runners. They probably can point you to some accurately measured courses for your workouts. Stretch & Strength: Mondays and Thursdays are days on which I advise you to spend extra time stretching- -and do some strength training too. Monday is a rest day and Thursday is an . If you want to stay away from the gym so that Monday becomes a complete day of rest, switch some of your stretching and strengthening to Tuesday or another day of the week. It's wise to stretch every day, particularly after you finish your run. And don't forget to stretch while warming up for your hard runs on Wednesdays. I can't emphasize this strongly enough. Strength training could consist of push- ups, pull- ups, use of free weights or working out with various machines at a health club.
Runners generally benefit if they combine light weights with a high number of repetitions, rather than pumping very heavy iron. Rest: Rest is as important a part of your training as the runs. You will be able to run the long runs on the weekend better- -and limit your risk of injury- -if you rest before, and rest after. Be realistic about your fatigue level- -particularly in the closing weeks of the program- -and don't be afraid to take an extra day off now and then. Long Runs: The key to getting ready to finish a Half Marathon is the long run, progressively increasing in distance each weekend. Over a period of 1. And in the final week, you get to run 1. The schedule below suggests doing your long runs on Sundays. You can do them Saturdays, if more convenient, but it is easier to do a long run the day after a pace run, than vice versa. Walking: Walking is an excellent exercise that a lot of runners overlook in their training. I don't specify walking breaks, but feel free to walk during your running workouts any time you feel tired or need to shift gears. In coaching marathon runners, I usually recommend that they walk through the aid stations to allow them to drink more. Racing: Most experienced runners enjoy racing, so I've included three races during the training period: one every third week, building from 5- K to 1. K to 1. 5- K. There is nothing magic about those particular distances, and there is no necessity to race. Plug in whatever races look interesting from your local area wherever they fit in your schedule. This training schedule for intermediate runners alternates interval running with Tempo Runs. An interval workout usually consists of fast repeats separated by walking or jogging. The program begins with 5 x 4. Half Marathon Training Half Marathon To Finish—for runners and walkers. It is fine to do cross training on Monday. Half Marathon Training Schedule for Time Goal Runners : Week: Monday: Tuesday (CD/Acg/p). Couch to Half Marathon Training Plan! By Christine Luff Published Sep. Week 8: Monday: Rest Tuesday: ER 4 miles + ST Wednesday: XT 40 min Thursday: TR 4 miles Friday: Rest. A training programme for you if you want to run a half marathon. Bear in mind that these programmes involve training on at least four days a week with some faster paced running. Challenging/slightly hard. Walk or jog between each repeat. The best place to run 4. Run the 4. 00s at about your pace for 5- K, or 1. K. For more information on speed training, see my book, Run Fast. Tempo Runs: This is a continuous run with a buildup in the middle to near 1. K race pace. A Tempo Run of 3. The pace buildup should be gradual, not sudden, with peak speed coming about two- thirds into the workout. Hold that peak only for a minute or two. I consider Tempo Runs to be the . In fact, the times prescribed for Tempo Runs serve mainly as rough guidelines. Feel free to improvise. Improvisation is the heart of doing a Tempo Run correctly. Pace: A lot of runners look at my training schedules and ask, . Some workouts are designed as pace runs to get you used to running the pace you will run in the race. In Week 1. 0, for example, I ask you to do . You might want to do a short warm- up before starting each of these pace runs. Warm- up: Warming up is important, not only before the race itself, but before your speed workouts and pace runs. Most novice runners do not warm up, except in the race itself. This is okay, because they're more interested in finishing rather than finishing fast. You have a different goal, otherwise you wouldn't be using the intermediate program, so warm up before you run fast. My usual warm- up is to jog a mile or two, sit down and stretch for 5- 1. And I usually cool down afterwards by doing half the warm- up distance. Cross- Train: I don't always prescribe cross- training for intermediate runners. That's because you're usually somewhat more focused on pure running than novice runners. But if you find that cross- training helps you prevent injuries, or if you enjoy it, feel free to substitute cross- training on one or more of the easy days. It may actually cause you to overtrain, which can have a negative effect on performance, because you never get a chance to rest. What form of cross- training works best? It could be swimming, cycling, walking, cross- country skiing, snowshoeing, or even some combination that could include strength training. Juggling: Don't be afraid to juggle the workouts from day to day and week to week. If you have an important business meeting on Thursday, do that workout on Wednesday instead. If your family is going to be on vacation one week when you will have more or less time to train, adjust the schedule accordingly. If this means running hard on successive days, so be it. Program in an extra day of rest to compensate. Be consistent with your training, and the overall details won't matter. Here is your Intermediate half marathon training program.
